    Journal of Atmospheric Science Research (JASR) is a peer-reviewed open-access journal publishing four issues a year in English, providing researchers, scholars, and scientists throughout the world with the exchange and dissemination of theoretical and practice-oriented papers dealing with the earth's atmosphere.

    We are now recruiting Collection Editors to edit Topical Collections in JASR referring to the hot topics in atmospheric science.   • Congratulations to our Editor-in-Chief Prof. Qiang Zhang on being selected in the 2023 List of China's Highly Cited Scholars

    On 27 March 2024, Elsevier released the 2023 List of China's Highly Cited Scholars. The list uses a globally authoritative citation and index database Scopus as the statistical source of scientific research achievements of Chinese scholars, and analyzes the performance of scientific research achievements of Chinese scholars. Only published papers as first author or corresponding author can counts scientific research achievements. In 2023, 5801 Chinese Highly Cited Scholars were listed. They are from 496 universities, enterprises and scientific research institutions, covering 10 subject areas and 84 first-level disciplines of the Ministry of Education. We hereby announce that our journal’s Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Qiang Zhang, who is from Beijing Normal University, is honored to be selected.

    We would like to congratulate to Prof. Qiang Zhang's personal academic achievements, and hope that our journal can get great improvement under his professional guidance and support.

  • World Meteorological Day | At the frontline of climate action

    World Meteorological Day, also known as "International Meteorological Day", is the anniversary of the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization and is held on March 23 every year. The main purpose of carrying out World Meteorological Day activities is to let people of all countries understand and support the activities of the World Meteorological Organization, to arouse people's attention and love for meteorological work, and to promote the application of meteorology in aviation, navigation, water conservancy, agriculture and other human activities. The theme of World Meteorological Day 2024 is “At the frontline of climate action”.

    Since the 1980s, each decade has been warmer than the previous decade. 2023 is the hottest year on record, with global average temperatures about 1.45℃ above the 1850-1900 average. This is largely the result of a combination of human activities and the natural phenomenon of El Niño. Rising temperatures are accompanied by more extreme events: heat waves, floods, droughts, wildfires and rapidly intensifying tropical cyclones.

    The threat of climate change to human civilization is real and undeniable, and its effects are already being felt. Unless we act now, the results will be catastrophic. Our Journal of Atmospheric Science Research (JASR) will continue to provide an open, rigorous, and professional academic platform for scientific researchers, and we welcome scholars from all over the world to choose our journal to disseminate and publish more relevant research.

  • JASR Development Seminars were Successfully Held

    We are delighted to announce that on March 1, 2024, the journal coordinator Lesley Lu had a highly productive online meeting with Prof. Qiang Zhang, the Editor-in-Chief of our Journal of Atmospheric Science Research. Prof. Zhang shared numerous strategies with us to enhance our journal's impact within the academic sphere and provided valuable insights on how to boost our journal's global visibility.

    Besides, on March 4, 2024, the editorial office have reported the journal status to the Editor-in-Chief Dr. Jianhui Bai, who is from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. During this seminar, they engaged in a comprehensive discussion regarding the present status of our journal and explored various strategies to further amplify its influence.

    Throughout the two seminars and under the two Editor-in-Chiefs expert guidance, we have established specific goals for the journal's future growth, such as boosting submission rates, broadening our readership, and enhancing the quality of our publications. We are optimistic that our journal will remain proactive and progress further, ultimately achieving inclusion in additional prestigious databases.

  • Warmly Welcome Prof. R. Iestyn Woolway as the newest Associate Editor of JASR.

    We are pleased to announce that Prof. R. Iestyn Woolway has accepted the invitation to serve as the Associate Editor for our Journal of Atmospheric Science Research.

    Prof. R. Iestyn Woolway's research focuses on the physical interactions between climate and water, with a particular interest in the physics and hydrology of lakes worldwide. This includes aspects such as climate-induced variations in lake evaporation, water temperature, ice cover and energy fluxes. Using a combination of in-situ, satellite, and modelled data, his research aims to answer key questions that relate to climate-related changes of inland waters. He graduated from Bangor University in 2011 with a BSc and MSc in Physical Oceanography and then undertook a PhD in Physical Limnology at University College London (2011-2015). Prof. Woolway was then a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading (2015-2018). In 2018, Prof. Woolway was awarded a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship, hosted at Dundalk Institute of Technology (Ireland), followed by a European Space Agency Fellowship in 2020 - based at the ESA Climate Office in Oxfordshire. In 2021, Prof. Woolway was awarded a UK Natural Environment Research Council Independent Research Fellowship. He joined the School of Ocean Sciences as a NERC Independent Research Fellow (Reader) in 2022. In 2023 he was awarded a Dillwyn Medal for STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine) from the Learned Society of Wales in recognition of early career research excellence for his work in the field of global environmental change. In 2024, he was awarded a Distinguished Scientist fellowship from the Chinese Academy of Sciences via the President's International Fellowship Initiative.

    We are pleased to announce that Prof. Xihui Gu has accepted the invitation to serve as the Associate Editor for our Journal of Atmospheric Science Research.

    Prof. Xihui Gu is a distinguished expert in Hydroclimatology at Department of Atmospheric Science, China University of Geosciences. He has an impressive publication record with over 90 peer-reviewed papers in prestigious scientific journals covering hydrology, climate, and geography. His research has been cited over 2,600 times, with more than 8 papers referenced in IPCC AR6 reports.

    Given his wealth of knowledge and expertise in atmospheric science, we are confident that Prof. Gu will play a pivotal role in elevating the journal to new heights. We eagerly anticipate collaborating with him and the editorial team to enhance the journal's impact and reach.

  • Congratulations! Five members of our editorial board were selected as World's Top 2% Scientists 2023!

    Recently, Stanford University has published an update of the list of the top 2% most widely cited scientists. The "2023 Annual Influence Ranking" focuses on highlighting the academic influence of scientists in the last year. This ranking, considered the most prestigious worldwide, is based on the bibliometric information contained in the Scopus database provided by Elsevier and includes more than 200,000 researchers from the more than 10 million scientists considered to be active worldwide, with 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields taken into account.

    We are pleased to share that 5 Editorial Board Members from our Atmospheric Science Research (ISSN: 2630-5119) were featured in Stanford University World's Top 2% Scientists list in 2023.

    With the expert leadership of Editor-in-Chief Prof. Dr. Qiang Zhang and the assistance of Dr. Jianhui Bai, we are pleased to inform you that the Aims and Scope of our Journal of Atmosphere Science Research have been enhanced and revised.

    Journal of Atmospheric Science Research publishes original research papers and comprehensive reviews in all subfields of the atmospheric sciences including but not limited to physical, chemical, biological and human components of the Earth's atmosphere. This journal also takes interests in studies addressing interactions between atmospheric processes and land surface, oceanic processes. Relevant topics incorporating weather extremes, policies, methods, and techniques are also within the scope.   • Congratulations to Prof. Qiang Zhang on his appointment as Co-Editor-In-Chief of Journal of Atmospheric Science Research

    Prof. Qiang Zhang is a physical geographer. His research is related to hydrological cycle and related effects in terms of resources, disasters and ecology. The major methods include statistical techniques and statistical models, hydrological models, machine learning and geo-intelligence. In recent years, he focused on urbanization-related climate changes such as urban heat island and urban rainfall island. Besides, he is also interested in soil moisture changes and relevant ecological effects, disaster effects and resource effects. He has more than 200 peer-reviewed papers published in international journals with total 5000 citations and H index of 54. Besides, he edited 6 books.

  • Congratulations to Dr. Jianhui Bai on his appointment as Co-Editor-In-Chief of Journal of Atmospheric Science Research

    Dr. Jianhui Bai obtained his PhD at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Acadeny of Scences (IAP, CAS). He is a professor and work at the Laboratory for Middle Atmosphere and Global Environment Observation (LAGEO), IAP, CAS. His research areas are related to solar radiation (UV, Visible, global, etc.), trace gases (SO2, NOx, O3, VOCs, etc.), aerosols, O3 photochemistry, BVOC emissions. He specializes in ground observations of solar radiation, trace gases, BVOC emissions (biogenic volatile organic compounds), and is interested in the study on the interactions between solar radiation and atmospheric constituents. He has long term collaborations with the scientists in the institutes and universities (KNMI, FMI, NCAR, MIT, IASB-BIRA, etc.), and organized international campaigns at some sites in China. He is the principal investigator of ESA and MOST Dragon 4, Dragon 5 and EU MarcoPolo projects. He has been fulfilled some projects support by National Sciences Foundation of China, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Meteorological Administration. He is a member of atmospheric constituents committee, Chinese meteorological society. More than 100 Chinese and English peer-reviewed papers have been published.

  • Aerosols from coniferous forests no longer cool the climate as much

    Emissions of greenhouse gases have a warming effect on the climate, whereas small airborne particles in the atmosphere, aerosols, act as a cooling mechanism. That is the received wisdom in any case.   • Air pollution linked to risk of premature death

    Exposure to toxic air pollutants is linked to increased cardiovascular and respiratory death rates, according to a new international study by researchers from Monash University (Australia) and abroad.

    The study, led by Dr Haidong Kan from Fudan University in China, analysed data on air pollution and mortality in 652 cities across 24 countries and regions, and found increases in total deaths are linked to exposure to inhalable particles (PM10) and fine particles (PM2.5) emitted from fires or formed through atmospheric chemical transformation.
